Cemetery Committee

Cemetery Committee

St. James Cemetery Committee is an autonomous committee that is responsible for the maintenance of St. James Cemetery, and organizes the annual Cemetery Decoration Day.

The Cemetery, located at the southeast corner of Innis Lake Road and Old Church Road, is of historical significance for both St. James Church and the community of Caledon East, as it contains the graves of some of the original residents of the community. For example, Elijah Tarbox, who gave the name Tarbox Corners to the original Caledon East, was laid to rest here at the ripe old age of eighty. Rebecca Bracken, sadly, was only a year old when she became the first recorded death in 1837.

Under a tall white column of poignant beauty lie the remains of Isaac Taylor, a young Lockton (just west of Palgrave) farmer who literally died for love. In July of 1868, Taylor challenged Thomas Squier, another local blood, to a boxing match over the hand of Annie Allen. The fight turned into a free-for-all and Taylor was killed.

Cemetery records are available from the Halton-Peel Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (http://www.hhpl.on.ca/sigs/ogshp/ogshp.htm).
